After 113 years of exercising the functions of a penitentiary center (1904-2017), la Model has reinvented itself in a civic and social space, in response to a historic neighbourhood demand.
After closing its doors last June of 2017, the old prison has been transformed into a place of cultural dynamisation at the disposal of the citizens and entities of the Ciudad Condal.
Its facilities will offer a programming of activities that will deal with issues such as the penitentiary universe or Franco's impunity, in which some of the municipal initiatives carried out in Spain to claim Justice, among others, will be analyzed. In addition, during the first six months of this year 2018 the jail will open a participatory process for neighbors and entities to propose possible final uses of the former prison. Based on this participation and the analysis work of the City Council, the 2009 Master Plan will be updated to adapt it to the needs of the city.
The price of remodeling the Model will be 4.9 million euros for a reform of 14,000 square meters that will go to green areas and 150 apartments for affordable rent. And it is expected that the works will start in 2020.
